Des Moines Urban Baseball League
Free baseball league open to K-6th grade kids

  • Approximately 100 kids compete with each other in scheduled ball games during the summer

Community partners:  YMCA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes


Bike Club

Fun, hands-on experiences teaching bike safety

  • Members gather to enjoy rides together on Central Iowa trails
  • Bike rides average about 8 miles each
  • BGCCI staff teach Bike Club members:
    • Bike safety
    • Bike etiquette
    • Maintenance
    • Repair

Healthy endurance training

  • Levitt staff member initiated running program for kids after learning to enjoy running herself
  • Kids learn
    • How to stay hydrated
    • How to check mileage while running
  • 3rd-5th graders at Levitt completed a 5K race for the second year in a row in 2009

“Coordinated Approach to Children’s Health”

  • Program offers non-elimination games that keep kids active
    • Games are often variations on tag and catch

Cheerleading  

Spirit Cheerleading
Performances that encourage physical activity, positive attitude

  • Spirit Cheerleading is a local performance group we’ve partnered with to teach our young girls a fun, new skill
  • Girls get to perform cheer routines locally…
    • In schools
    • At the Iowa State Fair

Volleyball

Preparation for tougher competition

  • 4th and 5th grade girls at Levitt learn fundamentals of volleyball
  • Programming gives girls a chance to see if they like volleyball and want to go out for the team when they get into middle school

Tae Kwon Do

Discipline and strength-building

  • Levitt offers Tae Kwon Do during the school year
  • 2nd-4th graders can participate
  • Members must demonstrate good behavior in school to participate

Hip to be Fit  

Hip to be Fit
Fun programming to keep young kids moving

  • Hip to be Fit is a 6-week program, offered in the fall and spring
  • Program offers healthful snacks
  • Kids get to pick one of three physical activities to focus on:
    • Soccer
    • Tae kwon do
    • Hip-hop dance
  • 3rd-5th grade kids can participate

Triple Play

Reaching goals and staying fit

  • Triple Play programs consist of different kinds of “challenges” such as:
    • Invent-a-Sport Challenge
    • Walk/run challenge
    • Home run challenge
      • Kids earn “bases” for completing different physical activities
      • Kids who earn most “home runs” with the bases they’ve collected receive special prizes
